Sadie gasped when she saw the man on the horse riding between Running Bear and the other braves. He definitely wasn’t Comanche. What was he doing here? He hadn’t ridden in to wage war, nor had he been found caught spying—at least she was pretty sure he hadn’t been because he rode under his own volition.

Then she noticed the horse he was riding. It was the same one Running Bear had given to Lee and Augusta. Was something wrong with them? Sudden fear for her friends overwhelmed her and she stepped forward.

“Are Lee and Augusta all right?”

The whole crowd turned to look at her. Only some were learning English and even they wouldn’t know enough to be able to follow a conversation, but she didn’t care. She could only think about how Augusta had become like a sister to her and how she would do anything to keep her safe.

The man blinked. “All right? Oh, yes,” he smiled down at her. “They are quite well. You must be Sadie.”

Out of the corner of her eye she noticed Running Bear look between them but she ignored him. He would be able to understand some of what they were saying—enough to know that she mainly wanted to see about her friends.

The chief spoke before she could ask further questions though.

“Who is this man?” he asked in the Comanche language. She looked to the chief and asked permission to translate. “Of course Talks Sweetly,” he said, using the name they had given her.

She turned to look at the man now. He sat straight on his horse and had light blonde hair and light blue eyes but his skin was a darker, tanned color that made his light hair stand out vibrantly. He was handsome with sharp features and a kind smile.

“I am Sadie, and this is Chief Sleeping Bear and his son Running Bear. Welcome to our village. The chief would like to know who you are and what you are doing here.”

He nodded at her then looked to the side where Running Bear eyed him like a hawk. “Could I possibly get down? I mean no harm, but I would like to be on the ground level if that’s all right.”

She smiled and asked the chief. He nodded once and gave instructions for all the men to get down.

Once they were on the ground, the man made a small bow toward the chief and began to talk. His words were elegant and she found she enjoyed listening to him. What he said was even more interesting though.

“My name is Victor McCain and I come because I would like to learn more about your culture and share with you the good news of the gospel.”

Sadie gasped at his words drawing his attention.

“Did I say something wrong?”

“No,” she said shaking her head. The chief looked at her, interested to know what they were talking about.

She turned toward him and explained, making sure to mention that Victor knew and served the God that she did.
